Video – Team working:

Candidate: Sonia

Watch option A:

Interviewer: Can you describe a time when you have worked in a team to deliver a piece of work?

When I’ve worked in a team? Well….. erm, yep I’ve always been working in some sort of team….at uni or when I’m  planning trips with my ski society. I really do enjoy being part of a team so take any chance I have to get really stuck in with some kind of team project….just like working in a group.

Interviewer: Okay, tell me about a time when you’ve worked as part of a team to complete some work

Oh yes yes, right, on my Geography course at university…this is last year. We worked in a team after a field trip to Iceland as part of the climate change module….. we had to do some research as a team for our project, which needed to be written up and handed in as a group assignment a few weeks later. I was really excited about going somewhere that I’d never been before and we were put into groups of five before we left; our tutor put us into the groups. It was nice to meet people on my course that I’ve not spoken to before .

Interviewer: And what was your role in the team?

Erm well we were all working together on the research…..we looked at different things like temperature, changes over the week, you know things that we needed to cover in our assignment. We sort of…we just got on with things, everyone was really reliable so we didn’t need to worry about them not getting the research done….…so yeah that was the best part of working together. We worked on a report that we had to submit as a group so spent time working on getting it ready for submission, having meetings and catching up on it.

We collected all of our data in Iceland then did a bit more research when we got back and it was a great trip and (Jokingly) a little bit too cold for my liking though  but we all got on well, I liked my team; and I think everyone liked each other too!

Interviewer: but, what did you do?

What did I do? Well I was a team player, I just worked with everyone else to get the research and we  explored the town we were staying in…….we went to a local restaurant. I think as a group we had a really good trip, got to learn lots and had a bit of time to check out the attractions too.

Interviewer: So, how did you work with the other team members?

Really well, I got along with them and I think they liked me too. By the end of the trip we’d gotten to know each other really well. Some of the group were better at you know doing other things …..so we just sort of split the work up like that……it worked out well for all of us as because we were each doing something we liked.

When we got back to uni, we set up a couple of meetings so we could catch up on the work.  We needed to write up our work as a group so these meetings obviously helped and at one meeting we decided on getting our work done by the following week to get ahead of the official deadline….just so we could get it out the way…. but we noticed that Meilin didn’t look too happy with that. We shared out the work equally so we each had a bit each and we needed Meilin to do her part for our report before we pulled it all together.

Interviewer: And what did you do in this situation once you realised Meilin wasn’t keen on your deadline?

Well we weren’t too worried about pushing it back, I mean we were already ahead of schedule anyway. I remember we asked her what she thought about the deadline. She said she was  putting on an event with her Cultural society so was really busy with that.……… so, as a group we decided that we didn’t need Meilin’s work just yet, so gave her a bit of space for the event. I think it was an extra 10 days or so ………it still meant we had enough time to get it done which was fine.

Interviewer: and to what extent was the team successful in delivering this work?

Really successful I think, we ended up with a mark of 65% on the project. We all had fun when we were in Iceland and worked really well together. I think we were all considerate about Meilin’s situation…..we’ve all got something going on at the moment so we understood it must have been a pretty stressful time for her. This helped as she sent us her part the next week anyway and we just pulled together the report and you can tell that we worked well together as our grade shows that, plus I made some new friends.
