Interviewer: Tell me about a time when you've drawn upon the people you know to achieve a goal?

Erm….last year at school we had to complete some work experience during term time…..they’d organised a placement for me at my, in a local company with the finance team…… an area I was thinking about going into. A week before I was supposed to start, they called me and said the person who was supposed to supervise me was off sick……there was no one else to support me as they were really busy picking up the extra work.

And what did you do in this situation?

I didn’t want to miss out on doing some work experience as I knew how valuable it would be to me in the future so I thought about getting in touch with some people I know…..just in case they knew of anyone that could help. Some of my friends had asked their friends and family to help them find something so I thought it’d work for me.

OK, who did you approach and why?

…..well just some people I knew through friends and family. I sent them an email with some information on what I was looking for and asked if they could put me in touch with someone willing to offer work experience.

And what did you need to tell them?

Erm well I guess just some information on what I was looking for and why. I did call them to explain what I was looking for, and why, too. I gave them the dates I needed to complete the work experience and also why I was interested in the area.

And what was the outcome?

One of my brother’s friends who got back to me introduced me to their manager……I met up with him and I got a placement in the end. It went really well and I managed to get a part time job over the summer.

OK, how did you approach the manager after being introduced?

….oh yeah well I spoke to my friend about how to approach him and then we had a meeting. It definitely helped to do this beforehand as we had more to talk about…I think that’s what helped me get the placement.

And what did you learn?

Just like my friends, my family and friends were a good starting point for me to find a placement. I think my good relationship with them helped me as they were more willing to help me out.
